    Six cases of the Powassan, or POW Virus, were reported in Minnesota between 2008 and 2010.

    Unlike the Lyme Disease rash, symptoms of the POW virus include fever, vomiting, loss of coordination, and difficulty speaking.

    According to Marissa Hatlen, Horticulture Assistant at the UW-Extension in Oneida County, the virus is new to the area. “This disease was first reported in the U.S. in 1958, so it’s been a very slow growth but it’s finally hitting in our area.” Hatlen says it’s unknown how long it takes for the tick to transmit the POW virus, but it’s suspected to be shorter than the time needed for Lyme Disease.


    The best way to prevent a tick bite is to cover your skin, according to Hatlen. “Wearing long pants and making sure your
